December 5th

It was a beautiful, beautiful day today but very cold. It did not get above freezing all day. This is pretty early in the year for that cold of weather. But it was still a good day because Dennis was home with me today and we were able to spend the entire day together. We got our grocery pick up at noon and the only thing they didn’t have was my chai tea pods. After we got home I got to thinking I probably should have ordered the ham for Christmas before they start running out of them like they did the small turkeys at Thanksgiving. Oh well. I still have some time before we need it.

Here is the mini stocking number five.  You can see my Christmas lights reflecting on the countertop. Today there was a votive candle and some candy.

I wanted to tell you tonight about my friend Laurie and her husband Curtis. I went to school with Laurie from K-12th grade and she lived right across the street from me. Well she has grown up and became Mrs. Santa Claus! Actually Laurie is an EMT/paramedic in an emergency room in rural Nebraska and Curtis is a retired trucker.  But the day after Thanksgiving she and Curtis transform into Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. I think they look like the real thing! They spend the entire season putting their own lives on hold and performing this service for theirs and the surrounding  communities. They visit sick children in the hospitals all over the area and pretty much go wherever Santa and Mrs. Claus are needed to bring hope and cheer.

I’m not sure how this year of Covid is affecting how they are carrying out their duties, but I know they are making it work somehow. They live for this time of year. It’s people like this who gave so much of themselves all year long and especially at the holidays that give me hope. Not the things we see on the evening news. And I would like to think that there are more good people out there that we just don’t hear about.

I hope you all enjoyed hearing about Laurie and Curtis. I honestly do believe there are a lot of people out there like them and many are working behind the scenes to help make this world a better and brighter place for all of us.  We need to keep feeling hopeful and pray for a better tomorrow.

Blessings and love,
Betsy

  1. Your friends make a wonderful Santa and his Missus! Whenever I got to play one of those big costumed characters in our ice shows I loved how the crowd reacted to you, especially the kids. It is hard work wearing so much hot gear for long periods. I really admire them for it.

  2. What a lovely thing for Laurie and Curtis to do. May they be doubly blesses for the joy they spread. We all definitely could use with a whole lot of daily cheer. My volunteering at the hospital in the pediatric ward has stopped because of the pandemic and the ladies who work for the organization are still doing their work from home. I don't know how next year will pan out but I'm thinking that my days of volunteering there may be over. I think someone needs to produce a good new only channel. I'm tired of the news being all bad. We need to start highlighting all the good out there. Take care. Enjoy your candle and candy.

  3. Laurie and Curtis make a perfect Mr. & Mrs. Claus.

My father-in-law was Santa for many years until health issues forced him to stop. He made a pretty good Santa, if I do say so myself. LOL

  4. We have a high school friend who, along with his wife, turn into Santa and Mrs. Santa every December. It's such a wonderful time for children and adults alike.

  6. What a neat story of your friends, Mrs. and Santa Claus! They must be the kindest most generous people. Gosh that is cold up there! We awoke to a very cold house as our pellet stove had shut down, but it's warm and cozy now, thank goodness. Stay warm and safe, my friend! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. I so loved this story. I can't tell you how thoughtful Santa is every year to Little B. He really takes his time and talks to him. I just think it is so amazing that people are so generous and take time to make this time of year so special for others. Well done by your friends. Stay safe.

  8. Your friends sound like such amazing people. I hope that Covid virus doesn't curtail their spreading of Joy too much. It would be too bad if it did.

  9. Your friends are the perfect Mr. & Mrs. Claus! I hope they have some idea how much their service is appreciated. And yes, I think you are right. I think there are lots of people out there doing great, wonderful things but we don't hear about them because they generally aren't the type of people to brag about what they are doing. If someone else doesn't take the time to acknowledge their good deeds, they go unnoticed. Thank you for sharing your friends' story.

  11. Your friends certainly look like the real deal - no fake beard there! And love those twinkling eyes! I appreciate you sharing this story - a pick-me-up on these days when we hear so much sadness and negativity. Blessings on you and your Santa friends!

  12. Your friends are fabulous and really look the part! I agree with you that there are many kind, generous, loving people in the world and we should feel hopeful about that fact. We too often hear of the opposite ones and that makes us feel discouraged. I honestly believe that the good outnumber the others! Keep your spirits lifted with positive thoughts! Thank you!

  13. Awww! What a swert photo of them! Bless their hearts for doing this for those children and families! Thre are thousands of folks who do things out of view for the benefit of others, much of which is never known. (Some of us prefer to do our deeds "anonymously." πŸ˜‰) Be blessed, Betsy!! πŸ™πŸ»❤️

  17. Oh, wow! I LOVED reading about Laurie and Curtis! I agree that they look exactly how I have the "real" Mr. and Mrs. Claus pictured! What special couple, and I can only imagine the joy and peace they are bringing, especially this year. God bless them and all who are like them.
