Rain, rain, rain

Hi everyone! It seems like a lot of the country is getting rain right now. We went quite a while without any, but the last few weeks have been rather damp. It poured constantly from about 2:00 yesterday morning until about 9:30 this morning. It is supposed to rain more this afternoon too. Everything is damp and it’s dreary out and it sure feels a lot like fall.

This is the most colorful tree in our neighborhood. It’s in Dennis’s cousins yard right across the street. Not the best picture, but it’s raining again and I wasn’t about to go stand outside to take a photo. 🍁🍂🍁We’ve also had very high winds that have blown most of the leaves that have changed, off of the trees.

Since Zoey it’s so little, she can fit under several portions of our fence. Plus, the previous owner took the gates off and they are an unusual size so we have not been able to just let her run loose in our yard. We bought this little fence and have had it just past the patio on the grass and it’s worked perfectly for her. We can move it around wherever we want it in the yard. Now, with the rain and the snow on the way, we bought this patch of pet grass. Apparently it’s not regular Astroturf, but don’t ask me the difference! We put it under the deck during the past few days of heavy rain and it’s worked a charm. We don’t have to go stand in the rain and she can go potty without getting completely soaked. Enough rain blows underneath that it washes the mat off well too.

I finished the wrist warmers for our granddaughter Kyleigh for Christmas. The pattern is “Cloudburst” by Arienne  Gray.  They were quite fun to make and very quick. Although I was worried about the chart, they also had written instructions that I haven’t noticed before. I have no idea what the yarn is. I’ve had it for years and years. They are blocking today. I like to wait to sew in the ends until after blocking.
This is the prayer shawl that I’m working on for the medical center. I just began the second skein and I think it will be big enough with just the two. If you remember, these are the two skeins I got for one dollar each at Michael’s in their clearance bin. I believe they are cakes that were pulled out and so could not be sold at the normal price. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them though. The yarn comes out just like a normal skein. Such a deal. I’ll have a 24 inch wide by 5 foot long shawl for two dollars and it’s very soft!!

I have been working on stocking our pantry since we moved into the house. I re-organized it a bit a few days ago.

When I go to the store I just buy 4 to 6 extra cans or jars of whatever I’m getting. Now that we have pretty much everything we need, I’ll just replace what we use. The hardest thing is replacing it from the back without messing everything else up! I would love to have some of those racks that you can put cans on and they just roll forward but those are ridiculously high priced and we don’t need that much food.

We finally found a new freezer. They are hard to find these days. The one that came with the house didn’t work when we plugged it in and was pretty old. I listed it on Facebook marketplace for free and someone came and picked it up within 20 minutes! The refrigerator was left at the house too and works great. I’m just used to having a freezer so I can take advantage of sales. Of course there aren’t many of those anymore are there? I’m hoping turkeys are on sale before Thanksgiving. I think we will probably have around 20 people here for dinner.

I think that in the post where I talked about volunteering for the medical center, I wasn’t very clear. For the time being, I will just be knitting and crocheting for them. It’s very limited with the volunteers that can be around patients right now. My sister is a baby rocker in the NICU,  but she hasn’t even been allowed to be at the hospital for almost 2 years now. There is a waiting list for that volunteer position, although I would love to do it too. I’ll probably do something else when they allow volunteers back in.

It’s been a relatively quiet week. Dennis and I had our annual physicals Tuesday morning and they gave us the Covid boosters while we were there. As usual, Dennis had absolutely no reaction to it which is wonderful. But I had the same reaction I did to the original two shots. Yesterday I felt pretty icky with bodyaches, low-grade fever and headache. Today my arm just hurts. It’s good to have it over with. Now we just have the last shingles shot at the end of November.

I hope you are all doing well. Take care of yourselves and make sure you keep some food in the house. Those supply chains, at least here in the states, seem to have broken badly.

Bless and love,
Betsy

    1. I am glad that your son is not having any bad side effects from the vaccine. It does seem to affect everyone differently. We belong to a church called Florence Christian Church here in Omaha. It’s an independent Christian church. It is also the church we were married and baptized in. I have heard about the missionaries who were kidnapped in Haiti and that there are very small children who have also been kidnapped. I have been praying for them several times a day. The world is growing more and more evil. Turning to the Lord is what gets me through each and every day. Thank you for visiting my blog today. Blessings and hugs, Betsy

  2. It's been raining here too. that's a nice set up for Zoey. Your projects are lovely and t he shawl is so pretty for that price! I love the finger-less mitts. That's a nice big pantry! Enjoy "stocking up"!

  3. So that's where our big storm is coming from. Our governor just put out the alarm for severe weather tonight and tomorrow with flooding and high winds. They were filling up sandbags down on the shore just a while ago to protect all the waterfront buildings. Goodness. If it's not one thing it's another. I am so sorry to hear your booster made you feel yucky. I dread mine. My last one made me sick for a very long time. I know it is better than getting Covid but I've got too much to do right now to feel bad. I sure hope we don't have to keep doing this every 6 months.

  4. We've had cold, wet, dreary weather all week too. I love your fingerless gloves, that yarn is so pretty and so is the pattern. Kyleigh will love them. What a nice, big shawl you will have to donate... and for $2... doesn't get much better than that!

  5. Your fence and pet grass is pretty neat! I have never heard of pet grass. We have had rain, but nothing terrible. Just dreary. Those gloves for Kyleigh are just adorable! What pretty yarn! And what a great deal you got a Michael's. I have been trying to use up some close dates in my pantry. November will be my restock month. I like knowing we have a "food cushion". Our part of a steer is marching to the butchers in December so I keep counting the meat in my freezer. I can't over buy or the 1/4 won't fit. But I don't want to be short either. I did buy several 1/2 chickens from my favorite farmers. One of my former 4-H kids has sons who are 4 and 2 and "they" are raising chickens for their college funds. The 1/2's are huge. I may just cook two of them for Thanksgiving!

  6. We've been getting a lot of rain too. We finally got a few sunny days in a row, but more rain is expected for the weekend. I told Mom I'm going to have to get the special "paw-drying" mat like she has at her back door - the catio is a mudhole right now any my floor is filthy!

    The mitts look fabulous!

Dad had a little fenced area like that for the puppies. It worked really well.

I'm very jealous of your food organization. We we moved here, things just kind of got shoved in whereever. I really need to go in an do an overhaul.

When we moved here, they left the appliances, which was great since we didn't have our own. The oven is VERY small - just big enough to hold my cookie tray - but it does the job for now. The fridge is old, but it's bigger than the one we had at the townhouse - which means the freezer is bigger too - I stil have to be careful about how much frozen food I buy, but it's more room than I'm used to. We hope to get a little chest freezer sometime in the new year.

  7. You've made a lot of progress on the day-to-day things for your home.
We were under a tornado/severe storm alert for 5 hours today--it was one wave of T-storm after another! But the rain was needed and I can always find something to do inside! lol

  8. Great job on the mitts and shawl. I’m scheduled to get the booster shot next week. I hope the half dose of Moderna doesn’t make my arthritis flare like the second dose did.

  9. Your pantry is looking good! I heard that canned goods will go up as the price of steel is high. No meat...we go to the Butcher Shop...and they have everything we need...local raised beef. I do the same thing rearrange after I replace stuff putting the newest in the back...it is a pain but in the long run it will work out. Those are some beautiful fingerless mitts! Someone will just love that shawl! Your dog pen is just perfect for little Zoey:)

  10. I wasn't sure what wrist warmers were when you first mentioned them. Now I see they are what I know as fingerless gloves ( but I may not have that right). Anyway, they're lovely and Kyleigh is sure to love them.
Your pantry is very neat and organized. You are well-stocked for the upcoming months.

  11. Ok I just have to ask why for two people you need so many cans of same thing? I love in small house so never could do it but just have to ask.

    1. We've always kept extra food, especially where sometimes we get snowed in. I learned to do that in the northwest. Also, it's not just the two of us. We often have 8-10 people here on the weekends for meals and Dennis's mom eats with us several evenings a week. With the supply chain a bit crazy right now, we've decided it would be best to have food for about 3 months or so just in case.
I hope that helps explain things a bit.
      Blessings,
      Betsy

  13. We had quite alot of rain a last weekend! My car became dirty again after it was washed when I had my oil changed week ago Thursday! This weekend was nice and sunny but more rain this week. I am glad you figured out a way to keep Zoey safe outdoors and not run away from home. Sadly I saw a dog that was dead in middle of the road on my way to work yesterday. Big blonde dog. :-{ Stay warm and cozy while knitting and blessings to you and Dennis!...Becky

  14. Love the mitts you've made for Kyleigh - very pretty. I will take a look at that pattern. We did some grocery shopping today - YIKES!!! prices have sky rocketed. Hope your weekend has been a good one and maybe rain-free??

  15. It’s been pelting down here for the last few days which we are glad of because the parks definitely need it. It has also got a little cooler mornings and evenings. A Mediterranean Autumn which I like much more so that hot sultry August. What pretty wrist warmers which I am sure will be greatly appreciated by your grand-daughter when the cold arrives. I do like the colours and pattern too. Your prayer shawl is coming along well too and lovely yarn considering how economical it was. I often wait until the sales or special bargains to stock up my stash you really can pick up some nice quality yarn at good prices. My goodness what a larder and so well stocked! You could feed a regiment LOL ! Keep well. Amanda x

  16. I love the color of the warmers, soooo pretty! And that shawl is so lovely in those green and muted hues! We had rain last week one night but it only amounted to about a 3/4" -- at least it was something. It has turned cold here the past few days and apparently we're in for an overnight drizzle maybe mixed with a bit of snow. I had hoped that stuff would still be a ways off, but... *sigh* You know I don't like cold weather. We have no "pantry" to speak of... well, that's what they call it in the apartments advertisements here, but our shelves have other things on them lol -- craft stuff, grandson toys, medical supplies, personal supllies, yada yada yada. Your pantry makes our three tiny 3 foot shelves of food look mighty paltry... food has doubled and in some cases tripled in price here and seems everyone is struggling nowadays and just can't get ahead. One of our granddaughters had a fence like that for her rabbit... eventually it learned to lift the fence and would run around the backyard and get into the garden for snacks lol. After a few times of that, I showed her how to build a base for it so it could be "locked" down and immovable. Stay warm, dear friend! Hugs and blessings!

  17. Lots of rain here, too, but then you know how it is in the PNW. Love those mitts; in fact you inspired my to try that pattern, too. And the shawl is beautiful as well; what's that pretty stitch? Sounds like you feed lots of folks!
