Gorgeous Fall Days

We are having a string of some beautiful fall weather. It is supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow, but we really need it, so no complaints here. Then, more beautiful crisp days are predicted. Spring and fall are my favorite times of year.

I brought out my half finished sock yesterday and started on the foot. It looks gray in this photo, but the color is really a dark green it’s called Lost Lake Heather. I never did find the four pair of hand knit socks that were lost in the move. They were supposed to be Christmas gifts and it’s very frustrating for me.

Last night while we started watching the first season of “The Chosen,” (I know, I know, we are way behind the times,) I started a shawl. It’s really a baby blanket pattern that I got from Mandy, but I just made it narrower at about 24 inches wide. I got the yarn for one dollar a cake at Michael’s in a clearance bin. The label was gone and both of the cakes I found were half pulled out of the cake. For one dollar that isn’t a problem. I’m just hoping there’s enough yarn to make a 4 1/2 to 5 foot long shawl.

Last Friday my sister went with me to pick up my ID from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she volunteers rocking babies in the NICU. I’m officially a volunteer there now too. With my ID I’m actually allowed in the hospital during these strange times. I was told that Prayer Shawls are needed more than baby hats right now because so many more people are making the hats, although of course they will accept any that I bring in. With winter coming, it will be nice to give out warm shawls to people having chemotherapy, etc.

I also finished all of the Christmas ornaments for family. These two are for Caleb and Kyleigh and since I don’t think they ever look at my blog I thought I would show them to you. It only took me multiple attempts to sew these together. Three of them were sewn with the hangers inside! Now, I can see doing that the first time, but three? At least I have one gift done for each of them. At the rate I’m going this year it may be all they get!

I have 124 pairs of mittens in this bag ready to go to the elementary school here in Omaha. Zoey helped me count them and pack them all up in the bag. She is a big help as you can imagine.

I just sent Mandy a text telling her that we went for a walk a little while ago. It took a little over a half an hour just to walk around the block! It’s like walking a two year old. 🤣 Every new sight, sound or smell, it’s like, SQUIRREL!!! Then we come around the top of the hill and she sees Grandma’s house and it’s a dead run for the front door. She loves her Grandma and I think the feeling is mutual.

She has progressed to sleeping with us most of the night now. We had said we weren’t going to do that. Ha! She’s cold. What can I say? She is the sweetest little snuggler. She gets right underneath either my chin or Dennis’s chin and snuggles in and doesn’t move for hours. How could you possibly resist that? She always starts out in her kennel and then after her 2:00 am puppy potty break Dennis takes pity on her and puts her in bed with us.
I posted this on Facebook the other day. If the woman happens to be me it’s doubly true!

I had a dermatologist appointment this morning at 8:00. I think because I was a new patient, everyone else was taken in first. It was almost 9 before I was taken to an exam room, but I really did like the doctor when I met him. He’s very young and friendly and it’s the same doctor my sister goes to. Since skin cancer runs in our family it was one of the first things I wanted to make sure I had a doctor for. And big surprise, he took off a spot while I was there this morning. My grandmother had psoriasis all over her body and all of my siblings have it. I’ve been very lucky, living out in Washington it hasn’t bothered me at all. Coming back here I’m starting to get some spots of it though. Oh the joys of getting old!

Take care everyone. I plan to do some knitting this afternoon and then I have to try to think of something good for dinner. It’s always a challenge trying to think of something different isn’t it? stay safe and well.

Blessings and love,
Betsy

  1. I love the knit picks tweed - I still have some in my stash to make Dave some socks.

Dave used to say no cats in the bed, but Burton totally ignored that rule and snuggles up with Dave every single night. Sometimes Rupert will sleep with me, but not always.

  3. I had to laugh at the chocolate chip thing because I just took a handful out of the bag I keep in the fridge and dumped them in my mouth. I keep a bag of the dark chocolate Tolls in the door just for those days when I need a chocolate hug. Right now it's a couple of of caramels and a handful of chocolate chips every few hours getting me through the rest of this mess.
Your shawl is going to be beautiful and that bag of mittens....wowza!!!

  4. Hopefully you will find the sox you misplaced soon. That happens at times. Nice shawl you are making. I am nearly done with prayer shawl I have in a bag, still waiting to be finished. That's what happens when there is a busy week and then can't get craft work done! Sigh! It's chilly today but no rain altho there was rain on Sunday. You made me laugh about someone eating chocolate chips in a store! I found some delicious dark chocolate bars with sea salt in them when shopping at a new grocery outlet. Ate one on way home and one today and they were so delicious! I need to get some hot tea soon to stay warm inside! I enjoy the colorful leaves we've seen in our area as well as your photos you shared! Enjoy your little 4 legged child!!! Bark bark! :-}Blessings my friend!....Becky

  5. Giroux sleeps at the foot of our bed. There is something comforting about him being there all night. There is an afghan folded down there and it is his favorite night time spot.

I love the color of that dishcloth. That series of Sugar 'n Cream has always been my favorite. Not a bad color combo in the bunch.

As for the chocolate chip thing? I'll be over in the pretzel aisle hunting down the choc covered pretzels and inhaling them. Yep ... ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

  6. Nice work on the volunteering! I'll bet there are some ladies in the Antepartum unit that'd love someone teach them how to crochet! All those mittens are going to make some kids happy and warm. Hugs from WA!

  7. That is a great bag of mittens! I hope your shawl works out! Sounds like Zoey is a bit spoiled! BUT you are having fun with her and that is what matters! How wonderful that you are a volunteer at the hospital!!

  8. A bag full of mittens will be appreciated by the staff and students at the school. Nebraska winters are cold. Zoey is a sweetheart - who could resist her snuggles?

  9. Hi Betsy! So glad you're watching the Chosen! It gets better and better with every episode so keep going! Season 2 is awesome also! I'll be interested to hear which disciples are your favorites! Your little pup sure is cute and seems to be quite smart too. I love how she gets so excited when she sees Grandma's house! Very smart! You do such great things, like knitting baby caps and prayer shawls. I needed one of those two years ago. I know they are greatly appreciated! Keep up the great work. Those sox are so pretty.

  10. Glad to know you are well and keeping busy. It's such a blessing to be able to create beautiful, useful things and then be able to donate them to good causes. How wonderful that you are a NICU volunteer now. That's something I would definitely love to do. The group I used to volunteer with just allowed their workers back into the pediatric wards at the hospitals but they still aren't letting volunteers return. Your little pup sure is a cutie. Take care.

  11. Sorry Betsy.. read but time poor not commenting as I should. Glad yiuve skin checked, my dad had psoriasis and so have I and my sister. Summer humidity is worst, I don't have air-conditioning but fans help. I loved your shawl, I pray you can have enough to finish. I guess youve prayed to find them too. I find the best Finderer is the LORD! He just seems to wait for me to ask then joy is the greater because its shared with him.
Well done on mittens and Zoe is super cute.
Thanks for sharing, and may God bless and keep you and all whom you love safe and well.
Prayer hugs, Shaz in Oz. X

  13. You are so incredibly kind to do all you do for others, Betsy! You have a heart of gold, and I can only imagine the sweet difference you will make in the lives of those babies! God bless you for all you do.

  14. I agree that thinking of something to make for the evening meal is a real chore. Breakfast and lunch are easy but then there's supper ( or dinner, if that's what you call it). I used to have a 2 week rotation schedule but now that it's just the two of us it makes less sense.
It's such a good thing you do with knitting mittens and shawls and socks. I'm sure those who receive them appreciate them a lot.

  15. I love your mitten ministry! Lots of little fingers will be grateful and warm this winter. And I know the shawls will be appreciated, too. Who knew your whole world would be changed with this adorable family member! What a cutie she is.

  16. Zoey is adorable in that photo! So CUTE! Lol about sharing your bed with her. Our dog is much larger than yours and she insists on being with her Papa all day and all night too. Thank you for volunteering in the NICU. Our youngest spent time there so I applaud your efforts. Great handiwork as always.
    Blessings,
    Aimee

  17. Oh I need that anchor from the 1ord right now!!!! I need some prayers Dear Betsy. This too sha11 pass. I'm a bit sad and want it to stop. Putting the padd1eboards away made me sad. It was a great year for padd1ing. Maybe I can get away with Fireman this winter and padd1e.

  18. Lots of gorgeous yarn and delightful choice of colours. That is such a lovely bag of mittens and donating all of them a really rewarding gesture. You use your time so generously and volunteering at the local hospital too. Our cat used to sleep with Sr P even though I would put him back in his bed but no nighttime he had had to be with his Dad. Keep well. Amanda. X

  19. I can't wait to see your shawl completed. I've made many prayer shawls and have a few to go to our local nursing home. I tried making mittens but they came out all wonky so I gave up. How kind and generous of you to donate to the elementary school. I used to work in an elementary school and mittens would have been very much appreciated there. Have a great week!

  20. I know it's just the way the photo was taken, but the mittens look big enough to hold Zoey! 😆 Bet she's good at counting. 😉 // I'll be praying about your psoriasis and for whatever treatment your new doctor tries will work well for you. I have skin issues associated with my arthritis and fibromyalgia that drive me absolutely bonkers on some days... it's an anxiety that never goes away. // I love your ornaments for the family! I'm slowly working on my ornament idea for this year for the kids/grandkids... slow progress so far as I can't keep my mind on my work very long right now (stressors and health). I'll get there, though. // Thinking of you and keeping you in daily prayer! 🙏🏻 Hugs and blessings to you, my friend! ❤️
