Dresses and Snakes

Wow, that’s an unusual title isn’t it?  I thought I would pop in and show you a picture of the dresses I made this week before I forget. Now mind you, I am not the seamstress that most of you are. These are very, very simple dresses. Shoulder and side seams and interfacing around the neck and little sleeves. A quick hem and it’s done. If I were able to sit at my machine and do it all in one sitting I could probably make dress in 1 1/2 to 2 hours. But since I have to take frequent breaks from my machine, it takes me quite a bit longer. I couldn’t find a place to hang them up, so here they are hanging on a curtain rod! See, they don’t look like much, other than sacks of potatoes hanging here!

I add a couple of tucks on the front because the necklines gape otherwise.

Waving hello!  Please ignore the box on the floor behind me. It’s the “camp box” where I put things as I think about them that I need to take to the trailer.

These are such comfortable dresses. I much prefer dresses over pants. I know a lot of people can’t understand that, but to me they’re cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I have dresses made from the same pattern that have no sleeves, that I wear all summer long.

Another project that I had was my clothes pin bag that I’ve had for 41 years. It was completely falling apart. I looked on Amazon at new ones but I didn’t see any I liked and the prices were higher than I wanted to pay. And then it struck me. I have lots of scrap fabric and I still have the frame from the old one. It took me about five minutes to make a new bag and attach it to the frame.  That blue hanger on the left was purchased at the ¥100 store in Tokyo. It’s like the dollar store. It is the handiest little gadget and even though it’s plastic it holds more than you would think it would without breaking.
Some of these clothes pins are also 41 years old! Has anyone else noticed the old ones are a lot sturdier than the ones you buy now?

And now for the story of the snake.  Last weekend our friends Kevin and Lana, were hiking in Riverside State Park which is on the outskirts of Spokane. Lana had walked ahead about 20 feet further on the path to read a sign while waiting for Kevin to catch up. All of the sudden he heard something and he looked down and there was a rattlesnake that was approximately 8 to 10 feet long!  That was a shocker! Lana had just walked past it and since she’s hard of hearing she didn’t hear the rattle.  He sent us photos but do you think I can find them on my phone? Nope. Suffice it to say that they had one scary encounter. It took them about 20 minutes to figure out a way to maneuver around the snake. That’s the first I’ve heard of rattlers in the park. I wonder if it’s because there are so few humans out and about now. It seems that the wildlife is getting much braver.

This was a meme that our son Jamie sent to our family chat group.  It cracked me up because it’s so true.

Yesterday I made my first trip to Costco since all of this isolation stuff began.  I had to pick up Chloe‘s prescription or I never would have ventured in. I thought as long as I was there I would buy a package of paper towels and toilet paper and Clorox wipes so I wouldn’t have to go back again anytime soon. Nope. They were completely out of stock! I couldn’t believe it. After over two months people are still buying everything up as quick as it hits the floor? It’s insanity. I was able to buy laundry detergent and dishwasher tabs and that was it. People were loading their carts up with meat while I was there. I didn’t even go in that department. If people would just buy what they needed, as they needed it, there would be plenty for everyone. At least I would hope so. I know they’re saying there will be shortages of meat, but when people go in and buy everything on the shelves and leave nothing for anyone else it seems so selfish to me. End of rant!

On that note I will close my mouth, stop complaining, and say goodbye for now.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend with no snow!

Blessings,
Betsy

  1. The dresses look very comfortable. I prefer dresses in the summer and probably should make some for myself, but I haven’t sewn a garment since the early 90s.

  2. Hi Betsy! Those dresses look like they'd be very cool in the summer, especially without sleeves. It's supposed to get really hot here this weekend, at least for us, the eighties is hot! That sounds like one really scary snake! The only rattlesnake we've seen here was in Stehekin. We were hiking with the kids, and it let us know by rattling. Have a nice weekend. Are you going to the lake?

  3. I'm with you. As soon as it gets warm I pull out my summer dresses. I've made a few to since a simple cotton dress is so hard to find anymore.
Your clothespin bag almost made me cry. My mom had one too just like that. She loved to do laundry. She never used a dryer except in the coldest part of winter. Everything was hung out. I'd give anything to have a clothesline right now. Mr. Dryer is on the fritz and I'm not going anywhere to get a new one nor do I want any delivery guys in my house. I've been hanging stuff all over the house. It's pretty funny. Just when you think things can't get any worse they always do. Lol....

  4. Oh no about that snake!!! I got the shivers just reading your post. Not good!

I do like your dresses Betsy. They look so comfy and I find dresses definitely cooler in the summer too. The fabrics are great (those are the ones you got from Good's, correct?).

I just got back from two grocery stores - both had toilet paper, paper towels, etc. I didn't go down the cleaning supply aisle as I don't need anything. Fletch asked about meat, but both stores were fully stocked. I only got some frozen salmon and some frozen salt & pepper calamari. We have a bunch of stuff in our freezer.

Have a wonderful weekend - Happy Mother's Day!!

  5. Yes the old clothes pins are much better than the new ones! Your dresses are just perfect! I like the length too! You are lookin good!
Sorry you couldn't get what you needed at Costco. I ordered online from them and it took 4 weeks to get here...I ordered Dried Cherries cause I like them in yogurt , almonds and some vitamins.
I am not so sure that we will ever be normal again :(

  7. I think that your dresses look very comfortable. I tend to wear dresses in the summer, because, like you, I think they are much cooler. I am not a snake person... at all... so glad that the only story your friends have to tell is that they saw it and not that the encounter didn't involve any hospital visits!

  8. Lovely dresses! I too prefer dresses to pants. In the winter, I warm them up with tights, or leggings on really cold days.
Sadly, while I'm good with quilts, my skills at sewing clothes are terrible. I rely on Old Navy for my wardrobe - my favourite is their fit and flare camisole dress, though I have several lovely maxi dresses from them as well.

  9. I'm glad you modeled the dress because it's so hard to tell what it looks like when it's just hanging there. The dress you're wearing is so flattering and I like the length too.
Your friends who were hiking and came upon a rattlesnake were very fortunate not to get hurt. How differently the day could have ended.

I know what you mean about old clothespins being better than new ones. I have a box of really old ones, never used ( I have lots of others that I do use) and the box they're in is marked .35 that's how I know they're old.
You succeeded in making a very pretty clthespin bag. Good thing you had kept the old frame!

  10. The way that our news people tell the news, it drives people to hoard out of fear. ABC seems to be the worst. They prey on the gullibility of the uneducated.

Meat? Fine if I have it. Fine if I don't. I certainly won't pay inflated prices for it.

  11. Oh Betsy! Loved your pretty dresses and hearing about what you're doing lately. And your son's funny meme! I had to share that at Facebook. Thanks so much (and for commenting at my blog, too!). <3 Hugs, Debra

  12. Hi Betsy... I've several patterns that I make up for my summer dresses as so agree they're cooler.. but in winter I mostly wear pants.. I've bad arthritis if dont keep joints warm, and pants are warmer. Love fabric you use.. whoah!!! with rattlers in park.
I've nearly trodden on red belly black snake out bush walking.. mercifully think snake was as scared as I was. But they are lethal and can be aggressive. We've actually lots if poisonous snakes.
Good reason to live in town. Although they are about, though, as saw one a few years back near tree I walk ubder most days.

Mm sad re your buy ups, our shops are getting back tp normal. Meat no issue here we produce more than we eat.

Thanks for sharing, and may God bless and keep you and all whom you love, in these different times.
Prayer hugs, Shaz in Oz. X

  13. Your dresses are pretty! I love the little print fabric. I used to wear nothing but long skirts and they were much cooler than jeans in summer. The old clothespins were stronger and better made, like most everything else these days. Oh, the snake! I have never seen a rattlesnake, thank goodness. But we have lots of long rat snakes (black snakes). You look pretty modeling the dress.

  14. Your dresses are very pretty! Could I ask what pattern you used? I am looking for a simple dress pattern so I can make some nice lightweight cotton dresses, in Florida it is always so hot and humid and these dress look perfect. Scary about the snake. Glad no one was bit. God bless Xx

  15. I like wearing skirts all summer instead of pants/shorts. I understand the comfort!
very nice job on the sewing; the dresses look nice on you! I didn't appreciate the snake part of this post! Yuck!

  16. Betsy, I like your dresses. I remember wearing shorter ones like that one years ago. I like wearing skirts now. I wore a sleeveless dress with a white sweater on Easter, even though we didn't go to in person church. Why not? I saw other people on FB that shared photos of them dressed up for Easter as well, going to virtual church. i met a lady that lives in Newport, WA. She's doing a tupperware party on my FB event page. Not that far from Loon lake! I don't always buy everything either. I leave enough for other people. At one point Trader Joes would only allow you to have one cart full. Only 2-3 items, especially cereal. They keep tp in the back and have people ask for them, still. Only one pkg per household. Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day my dear friend! Hugs!

  17. The fabric you chose for your dresses is so pretty! I love small prints. You really got a lot done and a clothespin bag too! I loved the meme from your son and the snake story was a rally close call! Glad no one got bitten!
Fear is a terrible thing and makes people act irrationally. Happy Mother's Day!

  18. Your dresses are wonderful Betsy, you did a great job. I prefer skirts to shorts and I like to wear them all summer. I would have been scared to death with that snake although when the boys were young I had them out for a walk and walked very close to a copperhead right behind my property. I hope you are staying safe my friend. Hugs to you and Happy Mother's Day.

  19. Well done to make a whole new wardrobe, Betsy! My newest clothes are some new underwear.. so exciting! I hope you hear from all your kids today. I got wishes on Facebook from 2 so far. I sure do miss how often we used to see our son and his family. It's heartbreaking actually. But we will continue on being safe so we can live long enough to see us all safe. That snake story was quite scary. My uncle was the king of the rattlesnake round-up in Oklahoma.. so he always had snakes and I've had nightmares about them my whole life.

    ❀•.❤•.✿.•❤ Happy Mother's Day! ❤•.✿.•❤•.❀

  20. I LOVE YOUR DRESSES!!!! I love that TURNS OUT!!!! We need to laugh.
Ive not been INSIDE a store since mid March. Just get aggravated enough seeing people from my car, not distancing and not wearing masks. What happened to caring about herd mentality?? Praying for a vaccine. Praying

  21. I think your dresses are just beautiful! I totally agree - I wear skirts or dresses all the time and have most of my life, so they are just the norm and very comfortable for me. I practically live in a jean skirt. It is so minimalist and simplistic and removes the stress of too many choices when getting dressed. I love it. Wow, that was one, big snake! We had them that size and longer in SC behind our country home. So wonderful to visit with you tonight, sweet friend.

  22. I like dresses in the summer, too. Yours look very comfortable. Great job! I have never seen or heard a rattlesnake, and I hope that I never do. My husband and I go hiking a lot. I have stayed out of Costco and prefer the smaller stores during this time. People are such hoarders in a crisis.

  23. My Nebraska niece always wears dresses of a similar pattern. I admire hers and yours! I was looking at a similar jumper pattern on the Vermont Country Store site and they want a high $$. I so admire your many skills, talents and your walk with the Lord, dear Betsy.Thank you for your friendship.🤗🙏💜

  24. Oh My Stars! I had no idea about the snakes... Hubby and I like to hike over the bridge (at Riverside) but, now we will have to keep an eye open for snakes.. Yikes!
I still have not been in Costco since Feburary...I agree,, if people will just keep a cool head and only buy what they need... oh sigh...
