On The Mend!

Whew! That was certainly a harrowing week and a half. We seem to finally be on the mend after both taking five days of Paxlovid prescribed by our doctors to combat Covid. I’m still exhausted all the time and have a cough that I fear will hang on for awhile. Dennis is still pretty tired too and has a very deep voice these days. But, we have had two negative Covid tests over the last three days so we are no longer infectious. I did a grocery order last night for Walmart and we went and picked it up this afternoon. That is the first I’ve been out of the apartment building since a week ago last last Monday. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. So much for having the original immunizations and the boosters. I was even too tired to knit or crochet for a lot of the time. You know that for me that’s nearly impossible. I hadn’t made it through an entire movie or television show in over a week without falling asleep until today!

I still have one last Christmas present to finish but the cable for my interchangeable knitting needles broke and I had to order a new one. It won’t be here until next Monday, so I will be knitting down to the wire on that present. I have started a few other things in the meantime though.

Several of the crochet podcasts that I watch have made a granny snowflake blanket. I am making my own version of it, called the “snowflake granny square”. It’s a free pattern on Ravelry. I’m making the center of the square, the snowflakes, white and I’m finishing the square with red and then will join them together. I hope to have it finished before Christmas and it will be a blanket I can leave out all winter. I almost made one that has Christmas trees in the center instead of a snowflake, but changed my mind because I want to be able to leave it out longer than just the Christmas season.

This is a black-and-white photo of the front page of the pattern. Where it looks black it will actually be red in my blanket. I’ve seen people use light blue and midnight blue for the border and sparkly white for the snowflake. Every one of them is beautiful. I just started the snowflakes tonight and I have one square completely finished and 10 more snowflakes crocheted.

It is a super easy pattern and should crochet up in no time. It’s nice to be crocheting again after so much knitting the past several months.

Below is a baby blanket. My niece Chaela gave me the pattern and the yarn a couple of months ago. She said there was no hurry to finish it since her nephew that she bought the yarn for graduated from high school this past year. Ha! So I’m making the blanket to give back to her and she’ll have it as a gift next time a friend has a baby. I took this photo after midnight and the yarn looks very washed out, but it is Bernat softee baby in the baby denim marl color-way. I just started the blanket yesterday and I have about 12 inches done on it so far.

The next two photos I took while waiting in the car for Dennis to come out of the computer shop. We’ve had light snow all week long with little to no accumulation. It sure looks pretty coming down though. Compared to the Dakotas and Minnesota we came out light in the snow scale! Aren’t these snowflakes beautiful though?

And on the computer front I will hopefully have my laptop back by the middle of next week. What a nightmare this is all been. And to have it happen while being sick with Covid is even worse. Every day we have a new nasty surprise with our bank account. I’m determined not to let it get me down though, during this Christmas season of celebrating our Lord‘s birth. It just means I’m not able to comment on any of your blogs right now, but as I said before, I am reading them and trying to keep up with all of you. Hopefully I will be back to commenting soon!

And now I need to go to bed as it’s almost 12:30 in the morning. My sleep schedule is not normal right now after being sick. Take care of yourselves and try to avoid this nasty stuff. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and I’ll be back again soon.

Blessings and love,
Betsy

  1. I'm sorry you caught Covid, it certainly is no picnic. My husband, daughter and son-in-law and I've had it, and all I could think was "how much worse would this be without the vaccine?" We might have felt horrible, but at least we didn't end up in hospital (or worse!).
Hope you both feel a lot better very soon.

  2. So wonderful that you have come through this illness and are now "negative". Praise God for that! I know it will take some time to totally feel like "new" again, but at least you are making good progress. I know, I had the flu over Thanksgiving and it lasted about 2 weeks. I still have coughing jags when I get nervous or too warm. It has certainly slowed down my Christmas shopping/etc. and I am still behind, but somehow it will all get done and we will still have Christmas. Your snowflake afghan is going to be gorgeous! You are so talented. I never learned to do any crochet or knitting because I am a lefty and there was no one with patience to teach me (and I wasn't really all that interested back then). Now I wish I had learned, but am not willing to attempt it at this stage in life. I just appreciate what others can do so beautifully. Praying your computer/banking woes are soon straightened out. That is so sad that these things happen. Oh, your real live snowflakes are so intricate and beautiful too! More of God's handiwork!! Thank you for sharing all of the above with us. Praying you both feel much better soon. Merry Christmas!

  5. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with Covid. Be thankful, though, that you had the shots and boosters. It could have been so much worse. I had covid in July and again in October but both were mild. Other than fatigue and a really bad cough, I did fine. I'm not sure how I would have done without the vaccine. The snow is lovely but you can keep it there with you. I'm staying cold enough as it is. 😆 Have a wonderful Christmas.

  6. I am so sorry to hear about what you went through. Covid is no joke. A friend much younger than me did a 10 day hospital stay a few months ago and she was also vaxed and boosted. Daughter was notified yesterday that a student she worked with all week who had a "cold" just tested positive. She's managed to avoid it so far but she's so worried she might bring it home to the baby-who is also vaxed but still. We may be done with Covid but it's not done with us. I hope you continue to mend. I've read that rest is very important to a good recovery and to avoid Long Covid which my BIL has been struggling with for three years. That's no joke either. Big hugs.....

  7. Oh, sweet friend, what a journey being sick brings on! I'm glad you are testing negative but you will be feeling the effects for quite a while so take it slow and easy! Your projects are beautiful--you know you are sick when you ar too sick to knit!

  8. I am grateful that you both are feeling better but unhappy that you were so sick even with being vaccinated and getting boosters. Rest and be careful out there.

  9. I'm so glad that you're both on the mend after having Covid worse than anyone else that I've heard of! Too ill to knit or crochet? Yes, you must have been so sick.
The crocheted white snowflake with red background will look stunning and as you say, be more wintery than Christmassy. Keep having naps and taking good care of yourselves. Granny M.

  11. I'm so sorry you caught Covid and have had such a miserable and scary time. I know numbers are way up in our community and flu numbers are the highest ever. We actually have more people in our local hospital with the flu than with Covid. I agree that we are all done with Covid, if only it would be done with us! Thank goodness you were vaccinated. I hope that you are feeling better by the time you take your trip! I am so sorry that your banking is such a mess. When we got hacked, our bank caught it right away and blocked all our accounts. But it was still a job to get us up and running again and at least 3 months to remove the tens of thousands for someone's trip to Dubai (I had to look up where that even was). It really makes you sick to think about it because we all pay in the end. Grrrrrr.
But here is to a brighter, happier and healthier week!

  12. So glad to see you're back up amongst the living again. Glad you're beginning to feel better. We had covid last June and the tiredness lasted for a long time. But you're feeling well enough to crochet so that's great news. Love those snowflakes...that will really be pretty when you're done! Take good care and get lots of rest! God bless you both.

  13. I'm glad you and Dennis are better. Continuing to pray for healing and cough goes away soon. Phil had that happen 2 years ago when he had a virus prior to testing. We found a good robitussan elderberry cough syrup that is more tasty. Megan was to fly back from FL to Minnesota on Thursday afternoon then to Portland. But too much snow ❄️ and ice no flight there. FL to GA then Oregon. Have a good sleep at night and breath well my friends. And no more stolen money please God almighty 🙏 amen

    Peace,

  15. So glad to hear that you and Dennis are recovering from Covid. I had read where the current booster more or less just keeps you from becoming so ill that you will need hospitalization. I got the current booster two weeks ago and hopefully I won't get covid. I hope you and Dennis feel much better in time to celebrate your Christmas get-togethers with your family.

  18. I also made the snoflake blanket, one for me and one for my DIL last year. The same colors too. I crocheted a total of 36 squares. Just love it and use it as a tree skirt. A wonderful keepsake. Don't let your crochet or needles cool!
