A beautiful day!

It is an absolutely gorgeous day out today. Yesterday was like this too. Blue, blue skies and temperatures in the mid 60s. Tomorrow is our camping trip and it’s supposed to be mid 80s with severe thunderstorms after dark and possible tornadoes. Yippee! Wouldn’t you know it? Our inaugural trip with our new trailer just to try to work out the kinks, and we’re going to be in thunderstorms. Then Wednesday and Thursday are supposed to be much, much cooler with temps in the 40s and low 50s. We have someone taking care of the house and watching over Mom for us and it will be a good little getaway. We’re only going a few miles outside of town so we can get back quickly if need be.

I have finished two more pair of mittens…

And I have begun a prayer shawl for the hospital. I’m just making the pattern up as I go and using Red Heart Soft Baby Steps yarn in the color baby green.

I finally got the photos from our walk last week downloaded. I love this name and just look at the date! 1813. For Nebraska that is very early. I know those of you who live back east have much earlier dates on the headstones, but not here.
These are very old too. And they lived to be older for that time period than seemed to be normal by looking at others around that time.

Dennis has begun the yearly battle with dandelions. The lady who lives to the left in this photo is very particular about her yard and she was very irritated when I got here last spring because the dandelions had taken over while the previous owner was in a nursing home. Believe it or not, as I was unpacking the car she was telling me what I needed to do to get rid of the dandelions! Welcome to the neighborhood!

He fertilized both yards on Saturday and watered so they’re looking very green. You can see up by the steps where the voles did damage last year. There are other spots in the front yard you can’t see very well, plus the backyard and mom‘s front yard. They stayed away most of the summer and then just before fall, they started digging holes and tunnels virtually overnight. Both yards looked absolutely awful and Dennis had tended them so well all summer. If anyone has any good hints for getting rid of voles we would certainly appreciate it.
Spokane apparently received over 2 inches of snow this morning. We had that here twice last week! What in the world is happening with the weather this year? And it sounds as if it’s all over the world.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter week and remember the reason we’re celebrating this week. Our Savior, Jesus Christ gave up his life on the cross so that those who believe in him will have their sins forgiven and live eternally in Heaven. Easter Sunday, or more accurately Resurrection Sunday, is the most important day of the year for Christians. Without Jesus rising from the dead, we would have no hope. But he did and we do. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Love to you all!πŸ’œπŸ’•πŸ’œ

Blessings and Love!
Betsy

  1. We are having a beautiful day here today as well. I managed to get out for a walk before lunch and it was lovely. I love the name Experience!! And Estabrook is a name I know from my time in Vermont as a kid. The local doctor in my Mom's home town was Dr. Estabrook! Have a wonderful camping trip and stay safe in the storms. I think you and Dennis will just be so happy to be in a trailer again. As for the voles - get a cat like Mabel - LOL

  2. Our yard is full of vole holes. With all these cats you would think not but they've gotten old and lazy. The voles move all my spring bulbs around so it's always a surprise where things pop up.

  3. We have had crazy weather here too. Our yard gets very swampy and I've never seen so many weeds. On two side of our yard it is unmanaged greenbelt. On one other side a neighbor that couldn't care less about their yard. On the front side the road. I don't think we will win the battle against the weeds now or ever. I'm learning to embrace the yellow! LOL

Sounds like a very particular and peculiar neighbor you have. Hope she chills out a bit.

  4. I sure hope you don't have awful weather for your first camping trip of the year. Maybe the forecast will be wrong ( it wouldn't be the first time).
I love that soft green of the latest shawl.

  7. I think you got our one day of warm weather! We did get a very little snow yesterday, maybe 1 minute's worth. Today is gloomy and chilly with thunderstorms predicted, too.
Have a fun time in your camper and also a very Happy Easter!

  8. Estabrook was a name from around Logan Iowa, it is a name in My husbands grandmas Diary. Cool beans...and Experience sounds like a great name:)
Hope your camping trip goes well. Voles are buggers they eat so many roots:( I say trap them using mouse traps baited with peanut butter...they can have hundreds of babies a year...maybe you neighbor would like some in her yard!

  9. We are having warm temperatures during this week, but today also brought winds, heavy rain and hail! All this weather will give way to cold temperatures this coming weekend. I hope everything goes well on your camping trip. You deserve a quick getaway. I love the name "Experience".

  12. Experience Estabrook. Now that is a name to remember. I definitely could not live next door to someone who doesn't like dandelions. Contrary to what people have been brainwashed to believe, they are amazing plants and have always been used medicinally and for food until someone decided that manicured lawns were more important and labeled them weeds. Pollinators don't differentiate between "weeds" or flowers, they are just looking for pollen, and they love dandelions. I hope she's not using poison to get rid of them as that is definitely very detrimental to the environment. Lawns are way overrated for sure. Seems like a lot of places are having some very crazy weather. Hope all will be calm for your camping trip. We've had a week of very blah, dusty weather here. I think some people are okay with it because it means it's not quite as hot, but I much prefer seeing a clear, blue sky. Take care. Be well.

  13. Ha- I would be the neighbour telling you I LOVE your dandelions!!! Dandelions are one of the first sources of pollen for bees (another other beneficial pollinators) in spring.
I will admit, I also love them because I grew up in the country where no one had time to worry about a dandelion-free yard, so lawns were COVERED in them - I remember absolute blankets of yellow when I was a kid.

I love the name Experience Estabrook! Reminds me of the gardener Capability Brown (though his real name was actually Lancelot). |I wonder if Experience was their real name or a nickname?

    All your knits look wonderful

Wishing you a wonderful camping trip with a few short thunderstorms to enjoy, and NO tornadoes!

  16. You are such a fast knitter Betsy! I don't know how you make all that you do as well as crochet so quickly! Lawns can look very smart but personally I prefer wild gardens (with dandelions) to unwind and relax in. Dense wild gardens are much more of a haven to all sorts of animals. IMO by far more interesting. However I do remember my Dad how much time he used to spend on the front lawn keeping it tidy and in perfect symmetry with the rest of the lawns along our street. I can see it would rather upset your neighbours if your lawn were not up to the standards they were used to seeing from their windows. Happy Easter :-). Amanda x
