Raccoons 🦝!!!

Happy Friday y’all! How are things with you? It’s another warm but sunny day here, although severe thunderstorms are predicted for this evening. I’m very excited! We’re going to dinner at Curt and Barb’s house for the first time since we got back to Omaha. We went on our first date with them a very long, long time ago. Let’s see, I was 15 years old and I’m now 61. πŸ₯° They’ve been friends for a long time, so we’re really looking forward to this evening and having a chance to talk without a lot of other people around, and just get caught up again.

But first I would like to show you our dinner companions last night. These five guys were right outside the window by our table. There were 11 raccoons in all. πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ¦πŸ˜‚

This restaurant is about 10 minutes from our house and is pretty well known. I love their little masks and faces.

They put out chicken, bread and potato scraps mixed with cat food for them and several feral cats in the area. It’s fascinating to watch them use their “hands” much like we do.

This is how close they were to our table. No zoom was used!  Just on the other side of the window from me.

I have wanted to try having an orchid again for years. I had two in the past and promptly killed them. Literally dead within days. My sister has beautiful orchids and told me how she cares for them, so I’m going to try again. Dennis bought this one for me Tuesday night. Isn’t it beautiful?

We’ll see how long it lives.

I don’t remember if I showed you the cross-stitch I finished while living in the RV. I had it framed after we moved into the house. Sorry about the angle. The sun was glaring on it so I had to move to the side.

My sweet friend Kim from Napiers Knits sent me this gorgeous #2 wool and project bag. I have to figure out what exactly to make with it.  Thank you SO much Kim. It’s beautiful. πŸ’œπŸ€£πŸ’œ

I finished four more pair of mittens and I’m ahead of my goal through the end of July.

I also started a lapghan for the Veteran’s home here.

My sister took all of the baby hats and blankets to the hospital for me yesterday. They were thrilled to get them and also need some other items that they will contact me about making.

I hope you’re all doing well. I pray that each of you is well and that the Lord will make His face shine on you and give you peace as you go through difficult days.

Much love and many blessings,
Betsy

  1. Oh my! That looks like as restaurant for me!!! I'd feed the raccoons here, but Dave won't let me!!! They are just so darn cute! (I like possums too, but I'm not allowed to feed them either)

Love the orchid. I've only ever been able to get one to grow and rebloom at the office. As soon as I brought it home, it died. I'm excited to try again at the new house. Good luck with yours!

  3. At 3 AM last night there was a raccoon at our grandson's basement bedroom window. One of their cats was so furious it kept throwing itself at the closed window but the raccoon wasn't in the least afraid. In fact we think it must have been a juvenile because it was unafraid and very curious. My DIL came to see what the fuss was about and she tried to scare the raccoon away but Nope. It was going nowhere. Right here in the middle of town and there's wildlife. The raccoons at the restaurant look very well fed.
I hope you have a lovely time with your friends, catching up on each other's lives.

  4. Good luck with your orchid. That species is pretty easy to grow (so they say). I could never get them to live in Florida, but I have one here and it is doing well.

I love your Sheep Virtues. Very pretty.

  5. What a sweet blog you have Betsy! It's always fun to come here and read the latest goings on in your life! Love all those raccoons outside the window...although in our last house, way out in the country, they caused quite a bit of damage, climbing up on the roof and trying to get into the attic. I wonder why the restaurant mixes cat litter in with the food? You are a whiz at sewing so many wonderful things....that new lap afghan for the veterans home is just gorgeous and all the mittens and that Sampler you made too! You are very talented. I get tired just reading about all you do ....God Bless You!

  6. Good luck with your orchid - I seem to keep them for a year or so and then they wither. Cute little (BIG) racoons. We used to get them around here when we were feeding some feral cats, but we don't do that any more. Possums that Val mentioned are good animals - they eat ticks!!

  7. What a pretty sampler!

A few years ago we had some construction near our neighborhood and were overrun by displaced raccoons. We don't find them cute, they are very destructive! Their little hands can open trash cans and strew trash everywhere. It can leave a big mess. One tried to open a window and enter my neighbors kitchen! She about had a heart attack. My husband has constructed an elaborate garbage can structure to thwart the raccoons. It has walls around it and a locked gate and has some kind of 2 x 4 thing across the top with a locking mechanism to weight the lids. It works pretty well; I have not figured out how to open it either.

    The sampler is wonderful!

  8. Looks like the gang that show up here every night. We had 5 foxes running around the back yard last night playing like puppies. I'm a city girl and these critters make me nervous-though they are cute.
Love the Sheep Virtues. I need to frame mine when and if I ever get this house straightened out.

  9. Looks like a mother raccoon and her “babies.” I’m surprised they are out in daylight: they are mostly nocturnal.

  10. How wonderful to be able to create so many useful things for good causes. Your cross-stitch is really lovely. Looks like the raccoons are very well-fed. Humans just keep gobbling up land and natural habitat for wildlife so it's nice to know that the restaurant is taking care of these critters.

  11. I am not so sure I would like coons in the area where I eat...even outside. They can get mean...I wish for them a area of wilderness and a river:) Your cross stitch is lovely, so many hours of stitching!! Wow!

  12. Oh my goodness those regions are so cute! We used to see them at our old house in California but oddly not here in Arizona. You stay cool. Here in my part of Arizona we are under excessive heat warning until 8pm tonight.

  14. Orchids...Oh! MY!!! Yes, I have been a killer of a few. I was ready to give up when a friend told me of how she cares for beautiful ones. Her Secret: It's all in the watering!!! When the soil is dry, not dead dry but dry to the touch....JUST!!!! addd one ice cube!!! It works for me now too!!! Good Luck!!!
That restaurant should not be feeding the raccoons...they are wildlife. They will become very aggressive if they stop feeding...they can cause real damage too.

  15. Nice cross stitch hanging item you made Betsy!! So kind of you to make items for babies and veterans. Raccoons are fun to see. We've had a few in our side lawn. Megan and I were at a lavender farm this a.m. then I dropped her off at church after getting gas for my car. She drove her car and parked it in parking lot earlier. She went to a memorial service for a dear friend who died of brain cancer. That way we wouldn't need to drive home then she'd have to drive back up. It's warm outside. No rain yet. Have a good weekend and glad you were able to meet with old friends again. God bless. πŸ’œ Becky.

  17. As cute as the Raccoons are (and the deer, chipmunks, squirrels) ---be very careful NOT to make them feel at home near you. Do not feed them or encourage them in any way... They can cause tons of damage if allowed to enjoy being near to your home. Raccoons are not usually out in the daytime --but this Mama (or Mama's) are teaching the younger ones how to eat/fend for themselves... At nights is when we have had damage.... We finally learned to put all bird feeders up at nights, get the feeders (or excess bird food) off of the deck (or away from our home). Raccoons are SMART --and can get into things you cannot imagine. WELL---sorry I bring such bad news... SO--enjoy them while you can --but beware of doing more... They are NOT your friends....

Sorry about the big storm. Hope you get your services back soon....

I always enjoy your blog and especially your FB posts...
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  18. Betsy, I would love that restaurant, probably as much as the raccoons do.
Your mittens and Lapgan are lovely, as usual. As is your cross-stitch. It gets me wanting to pick up a cross-stitch design I put aside ages ago.
    You take care.
    HUGS and blessings,
    Kim
