We h ad a great time with Curt and Barb here in the Black Hills. They left early Monday morning to start their journey back home. They arrived back in Omaha last night and today is Barb's birthday! On Saturday the three of them hiked to the top of Harney Peak. We have read that it is the highest point eastward between the Rockies and the Swiss Alps. The hike is a little over 6 miles round trip and includes climbing over boulders and rough trails.
This was at the top of the mountain. It was so windy up there that Dennis and Barb sat behind the wall to eat their lunch.
This one was taken while climbing upwards. Barb, Dennis and Curt.The Lookout tower at the top of Harney Peak, or as it's now called Black Elk Peak.And finally, the view from the very top! Isn't it stunning? It was a beautiful day although it looks pretty cloudy. Zoey and I stayed behind to do laundry. There is no way in the world that I would have made it up that mountain.
That same night we took a drive on the Wildlife Loop Road. It's one of our favorite things to do. Sorry for the blurry photo. We saw many large groups of buffalo. The annual buffalo round-up will be held at the end of September. There they will sell some of the herd to the highest bidders. They have to keep the numbers down to what the park can sustain. Custer State Park bison are known for the quality of their meat because of the wonderful grazing land. There is a lottery every year that people join in order to ride in the round-up. Dennis's cousin Chuck has been chosen in past years. It's quite an honor. You ride your own horse and help to round up the buffalo. Thousands of people gather that weekend to watch this annual event. We've been told it's an amazing sight to see thousands of buffalo running across the prairie.
And of course, the famous begging burros made an appearance. There were six of them up on the road, begging for handouts and another couple of dozen down in the trees finding the coolness of the shade.
We saw a lot of antelope. I think they're beautiful. This one turned around and almost posed for the photo.
In Custer City, which is really a very small town, we wandered through the tourist shops and found painted buffalo on nearly every corner. We particularly liked this one with the mountain goats climbing all over it. Here are Curt and Barb saying hello to him.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
What a place! Those views are spectacular. The begging burros made me laugh. I can't imagine seeing them on the road like that. Your blanket is very pretty. Smaller blankets work the best in strollers in this grandmother's humble opinion. They don't drag out on the ground and get caught in the wheels.
ReplyDeleteHello, my friend! What an exciting and adventurous time you are having! Thank you for bringing us along! I have to say I smiled when you said you stayed behind to do laundry. You know that is exactly what I would do too! Enjoy your visits and the beauty of this trip. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThe scenery is so beautiful! And so is the blanket!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scenery! Nice job on the baby blanket! I'm glad you are having a good trip!
ReplyDeleteI wish I was a stowaay on your trip. There is a town here in Arizona called Oatman where you can buy the only food allowed for the burros. That's the only place feeding the burros is allowed. Unfortunately I'm sure there are people who will feed them food that will make them sick.
ReplyDeleteAnd how brave your mountain climbers are! Won't see this mama doing that! Enjoy the rest of your trip.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand!! Amen. I love that song. I loved seeing the buffalo and the antelope and the burro. So interesting! And that was quite a tall mountain to climb! Whew! I know I couldn't do that! Your baby blanket is beautiful. I keep wondering, however, why it's called a "virus" blanket? Just curious. I love seeing and hearing about your trip and all the interesting places you are seeing. Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI am loving all the photos. Like YOU said about probably not ever getting east. I really doubt we will ever get that far west. So I enjoy the travelog. :-)
ReplyDeleteBetsy, there is no way I would have made that 6 mile hike and certainly not climb a mountain. It sounds like you're enjoying your trip and that's the main thing. I've never heard of begging burros. Interesting. I wonder what folks feed them.
ReplyDeleteI think antelope are so elegant!! And the buffalo? I'd like to see that round-up. What an Old Western kind of thing to take part in. Safe travels as you continue on your way.
Oh Betsy, I would have stayed back and helped you with the laundry! :) I would love to travel out west. I sure enjoy your pictures. I like those burros!
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking in! The photos are wonderful and I am so happy you are all enjoying your adventures. The hike looks scary to me. I think it is great that Dennis has friends to hike with and you are happy to crochet with Zoe. And it's only one part of the day. The animals are amazing and your trip to Culver City looks fun. And I know you are looking forward to seeing your son and granddaughter. The round up sounds amazing too.
ReplyDeleteSo fun to see where you're going and what you're doing. Your trips always look so enjoyable. Hope you continue to have a great trip and can share pictures with all of us. Stay well and free from problems on the road. Can't wait to see your next post. God bless you both. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteBetsy, thanks for taking us along with you on your adventure! Especially loved the animals!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all the pictures, looks like a great time! Yes, the view from the very top Is very stunning. The begging burros made me smile!! I'm standing with you, On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.
ReplyDeleteI like seeing the photos of what you shared about what you see while driving safely. I like that song as well and scripture verse. Have a good time visiting your family different states. Let me know where you will be in Oregon without having to be on the coast. Just a good thought, Betsy. Hugs and prayers, Becky
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the pictures that you post with your friends and other animals that you have seen. Grateful that you are being safe and staying with your dog and cleaning items that is important to you. Enjoy your time with your family and friends and a safe and blessed time on more of your vacation. I enjoy the song and scripture verse. Let me know where you will be at in Oregon that's not by the coast, if you aren't going there. It would be good to visit you again. Becky L.

That was some hike with a beauty of a view! I wouldn't have attempted it with my bad back either. You are having a good time! Thanks for the prayers, we got home today and I am tired. I am a little better....everyday I get a bit stronger. God is good!
ReplyDeleteWas having difficulty trying to leave comments on blogs, but thankfully back in business again. That hike sounds like it would be challenging. Wonder how I would have fared since I definitely am not as surefooted as I used to be especially after my last fall and still feeling some pain in my ribs from it although the doctor said nothing was broken. Good to know your limits. Just being out in nature and breathing fresh air and enjoying your time is enough. Take care.
