Stormy Night!

Boy howdy, we sure had a stormy night last night. Tornado warnings all around us and lots and lots of rain. We have had so much rain this year that so far everything is very green. I wish we could share the bounty with the drought stricken areas.
Dennis wanted to mow this morning because it’s the only day for the next 10 days we’re not predicted to be in the upper 90s and over 100. Everything is so wet though, I don’t know if he’ll be able to get it done.

Last night we went to see “Top Gun Maverick” with Curt and Barb. We went on our first date with them almost 44 years ago! I highly recommend the movie if you enjoyed the first To Gun. It was excellent. I usually don’t care for movies when they try to re-create the parts of the actors years later, but this was done very, very well. The flying and dog fights in the air were nail-biting.

I finished my “Monkey Socks” and kitchenered the toes about midnight last night. These will actually be for me. I used Knit Picks Hawthorne fingering weight yarn in the Willamette colorway. They are actually a bit more purpleish than is showing in this photo. None of my pictures turned out very well this morning because it’s so dark and rainy. I apologize.

Val, from Wandering Cat Studio, told me there wasn’t much Static yarn left at Knit Picks so I placed a small order. The two skeins on the left are actually green but in the light this morning they are showing blacks and grays. What’s up with that? The skein on the right is very true to its color. I do enjoy knitting with Static. It feels very good in the hands and yet it makes a fairly hard wearing sock.

I was reading online about the clearance sale at Hobby Lobby, so while dropping some things off at Mandy‘s house, we decided to take a peek and see what they had. Hobby Lobby is very close to their house. This is what I came home with. I was very, very pleased. When I added the prices up, the original price for all of this yarn was $158.80 and I only paid $39.56. I think that was quite a bargain. I got lots of Kroy sock yarn and various other skeins. Dennis is quite the enabler.

I began a new blanket for the end of our bed. I made one years and years ago and it has developed a rather large hole, courtesy of the puppies. 😍 In all honesty, there was already a small thin spot because it was so old and the babies just found the weakest link and made it bigger!  I began this very late last night and only finished three rows. Here it is in my lap. Zoey is sleeping under the blue blanket!

Here is a little section straightened out so you can get an idea of what the pattern is.

Based on the prices at the grocery stores these days, I thought maybe this chart would come in handy for some of you. I know a lot of people think things need to be thrown out by the date on the item, but that’s not true. Many things can be saved and eaten long afterwards.

Dennis picked Brad, Mandy and Piper up at the airport Saturday night in the middle of a thunderstorm. They had tested in London on Friday before leaving, as required to get back into the US. All three were negative. By the time their flight landed in Omaha, Mandy had 103F temperature. Monday morning, both she and Piper tested positive for Covid. Brad had his booster just three weeks before they left home, so we’re hoping that will protect him. We have dropped some things off for them in the front door without being near either one, except through the window to wave. They both have bad coughs and just plain aren’t feeling well. I would appreciate prayers for both Mandy and Piper if you would. So far Alex and his little family are doing fine. I was worried about the baby getting it because Piper was so good about taking care of her while they were visiting, but so far so good. We all managed to avoid this plague for so long. Mandy even worked with Covid patients. And now they get it.🤷‍♀️

I hope you are all well and surviving the wacky weather that has been hitting for the past several months. Take care of yourselves. From the sounds of it, it wouldn’t hurt to buy some extra food and anything else you might need.

Blessings and love,
Betsy

  1. I'm glad you survived the storm. I didn't know that hobby lobby had alot of clearance yarn. I've not been there lately. Sad that Mandy and Piper are sick. At least they were able to fly home. We had a lot of downpours of rain lately. Nice yesterday though. Phil isn't looking forward mowing as there's lots of tall grass in our lawn. Prayers and blessings my friend. Becky 💐

  2. You managed to get some lovely yarn Betsy! I know that KnitPicks changes the colors of Static, but I don't think they discontinue it...at least I hope not. Glad you survived the storms ok and I'm sorry to hear about Mandy and Piper. Hopefully they are on the mend and feeling better.

  4. Socks look great.

Sending lost of good healing thoughts to Mandy and Piper. I suppose at least they got it on their way home, instead of while they were there.

We moved to an area that gets much more intense storms than where we used to. Tornados are still rare (and usually small when they do happen), thankfully. Dave got us a generator, and we need to get our friend to hook it up to our electrical panel so we can easily run a few things in the house. We've had several good power outages since we moved in here.

  5. Sending prayers, and will continue to do so. Your socks look yummy! I am so glad you made yourself a pair, you are always making for everyone else and never for yourself. We are 97 today with a heat index of over 100. I miss Spring! That is a great deal you got at Hobby Lobby. I must be the only person who hasn't been there yet. I am trying to remain good by not buying too much, as so much of others things have gone up so much. Gas over five dollars, food through the roof. Very thankful you all made it through the storms. Sending prayers your way and wishing you many blessings sweet dear friend. ((hugs))

  6. I love Static too. I think it's Knit Picks best sock yarn and have no idea why they would discontinue it.
My SIL came home from a business trip to FL last Friday and now has Covid. Daughter is beside herself with worry over the new Grand who is only 5 months old. She's locked herself and the baby in a bedroom with a bathroom away from SIL and is hoping for the best. The worst part is they went to a friend's baby's christening on Sunday before he knew it was Covid. Of course they all held the baby for photos....

  7. I am so sorry about the positive tests. I hope they have very light cases and recover quickly. I am glad to hear everyone in London is doing well. I will keep them all in my prayers. We have had some nasty storms too. About a quarter of our town has been without power for 48 hours, but it is on target to be completely restored by 11:30 pm tonight. This has been miserable for many with temperatures hitting 100 degrees. What a great yarn haul! You picked the right day to go!!!

    1. DEAR BETSY: SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR FAMILY WITH COVID, ME AND MY HUSBAND HAD IT DURING THE SUMMER IN JANUARY AND WE HAD A VERY ITCHY THROAT AND COUGH, I FELT VERY TIRED AT THE END OF THE DAY FROM COUGHING SO MUCH, I HOPE IT IS MILD. YOUR SKEINS ARE BEAUTIFULLY COLORED, I HOPE YOU POST PICTURES OF YOUR CREATIONS SOON. IT'S COLD HERE AND A POLAR FRONT IS EXPECTED DURING THE WEEKEND, I LOVE THE WINTER SEASON AND I ENJOY IT VERY MUCH, KNITTING BY MY FIREPLACE. FOOD PRICES ARE INCREASING WEEK AFTER WEEK, IT IS UNBELIEVABLE HOW EXPENSIVE EVERYTHING IS, YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT AN INFLATION OF 8 PERCENT A YEAR, IMAGINE US, ACCORDING TO ECONOMISTS, IT WOULD REACH 80 PERCENT, WITH GOD'S HELP, SOME PREDICT 100 PERCENT INFLATION, WHAT DO YOU SAY? WE ARE TIRED OF SO MANY INCREASES, IT IS VERY HARD TO MAKE ENDS MEET, OUR RETIRED SALARIES ARE VERY LOW, WE ARE LOSING AGAINST ALL THIS ECONOMIC DISASTER THAT SURROUNDS US. I ASK FOR YOUR FAITHFUL PRAYERS ON OUR BEHALF. BLESSINGS SWEET FRIEND.

  9. Sending healing thoughts for Piper and Mandy. You are the third person I know to mention someone being on a flight and coming down with Covid.

Do you think Dennis enabled you because he is hoping for some socks??? LOL

  12. That yarn is the most sight I ever seen.😍. Our weather has been very hot and we are trying not to run the AC but we may have give in to the miserable heat and run it.

  15. We were surprised with a hail storm several nights ago. Hail, rain, thunder and lightning. It was pretty amazing. Fortunately, the hail was only the size of garbanzo beans, so no damage to speak of. Great bargain on the yarn. So sorry your family is dealing with Covid. I'll be praying for speedy recovery. I love the artwork with the inspirational quote. Beautiful. xx

  16. I found your blog in rather a round about fashion. I was a faithful follower of Teresa Kasner's blog and remembered you from it. We are camping along the Oregon coast right now and visited a few places that Teresa used to mention whenever they camped here. She is on my mind quite a bit and I hope her family is doing okay. Such a loss to all of us. Meanwhile, I discovered you too are a knitter and have enjoyed reading your latest publications and your new yarn purchases.

    1. I am so glad you've come to visit. I miss Teresa so much. She and Dayle were good friends to Dennis and I. Such a sudden loss too. I hope you're having a good time on the coast. It's one of our favorite places to go. I tried to email you but I couldn't find an email. Please feel free to contact me if you would like at queenbetsy2@gmail.com
