Happy Birthday U.S.A.!

I hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July holiday. Ours was very, very quiet. In fact, I stayed in my jammies all day long. In the evening Mandy texted and told us about the PBS special “The National Fourth of July.” I had completely forgotten about it. We have watched it most years. We watched the great entertainment and enjoyed the fireworks in D.C. very much. The fireworks here locally have been absolutely ridiculous. They were still going off at 1:30 this morning and Zoey is terrified. Lizzie too. She won’t even go outside this morning to go potty. Whenever we suggest it she starts starts shaking and runs and hides under the bed. This has been going on for over a week now and I expect it to continue for several more nights. I don’t know what people are thinking. I guess they aren’t thinking about other people at all. I feel so bad for people who have babies and small children. The entire condo was shaking from the cherry bombs, etc. that were going off until the early hours of the morning.

I thought I would show you a few of my decorations this morning before I put them away. Of course, this is one of my favorites! Let’s go camping!

Happy birthday America!

In God, we trust! Always and forever. And look! My orchids are blooming again.

These are the kind of fireworks I like! I love the beautiful tray that I received for my birthday from my blogging friend Pam in Florida. Her talented son Benton made it for me.

May He always shed His grace on us here in the United States of America. We don’t always live our lives in a Godly way and conduct ourselves accordingly, but I pray for His forgiveness for our nation.

I have been rather lazy about crafting this week because it’s been so hot and the thought of touching yarn is sometimes unbearable, but I did manage to finish three pair of mittens.

and I started another “Eventually a Granny” baby blanket yesterday.

Curt and Barb are coming over for dinner tonight. We’re planning to have Mexican lasagna, salad, bread, and strawberry shortcake for dessert. Otherwise it will be another quiet day today. And just a little over two weeks we’ll be on our way again, westward this time. We’re getting very excited to see our son and grandchildren in Montana. Since we moved to Omaha, it’s only a once a year opportunity. Then we’ll be spending a few weeks in Spokane visiting with our friends there.

I hope you’re all surviving these hot days of summer. It’s been absolutely miserable here with very high humidity. However, compared to the tragedies in Texas are struggle is minor. Please join me in praying for the families of the people who are still missing and that have been lost.

Blessings and love,
Betsy

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
by Julia Ward Howe

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

Chorus:
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

Chorus

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on.”

Chorus

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

Chorus

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Chorus

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

Chorus

  1. Happy fourth! A day in pajamas sounds like a perfect holiday to me!

  2. Poor pups! That's terrible that they let those fireworks go on for so long. It was a very quiet 4th here. The neighbors shot off a few but that was it. The town fireworks sounded rather dismal. It must have been a tight budget year seeing they have to tear down and replace our tacky water park. The engineers report said it was going to fall in a sinkhole and the chance for fatalities was pretty high. It's always been an eyesore for me so I hope it goes forever.

  3. Happy Day After...Love your decorations and the little camper is adorable. You home always looks so inviting, I would love to visit. We had a wonderful day getting to see great grandson #5, Peter, 3 weeks old. A wonderful family time as my dearest said a prayer over little Peter and the family. God is so good. Love your verses and hymns. Bless my soul. Thank you for sharing. PS. I love pajamie days!!!!!!

  4. Hi Betsy, I too have a dog that trembles and pants all the while that the fireworks are going off. Our fireworks started at 9:00 and lasted into the early morning hours too. I admit to having city parks near my house. Luckily for me, I have some sedation pills for my dog because I also need to give them to him whenever I take him to have his nails clipped at the vet. My dog got more sleep than I did because I also had to sleep in the basement with the TV on quite loud to help drown out the fireworks for his sake:) I'm planning to do the same tonight because I'm sure there'll be more fireworks tonight. Have a wonderful dinner tonight with your friends!

  6. I love all your decorations...they are all so beautiful and patriotic! That's a very nice tray too, LOL. And yes, the tragedy in Texas is just overwhelming. I am so very sad for those families who have lost their loved ones and especially the little girls. Just breaks my heart. I am sorry for your doggies who are having so much trouble with the fireworks. I can imagine it is hard since it sounds like there've been so many for so long. I hope it will be over soon. I am happy for you to be going to Montana to see your family there. That will be wonderful!!! I know you can't wait! I hope you have nice weather. Take care my friend, and keep "cool, calm and collected."

  7. I was really surprised at our neighborhood. Most holidays it is very loud and very bright with fireworks. I heard a few small pops and after 9 nothing. I'm guessing a lot of people aren't feeling very festive right now.

    Philadelphia had the Wawa Welcome USA that is a two-week long celebration of all things Philly. LLCoolJ was supposed to perform, but backed out due to the strike going on with on of the city unions. He wouldn't cross the picket line. It really reduced the number of people at last night's event. The fireworks looked good on the TV .....we don't go into the city for big events, especially at night and during a strike involving the sanitation workers (among others). I've heard it is getting quite stinky.

    Other than that ---- we made our celebration about all things grilled and picnic foods. We were happy with that.

  8. Sounds like the perfect 4th of July! I am so glad you get to visit your son and his family, too. My neighbors must have spent thousands on fireworks and I am over it. It's like lighting 100 dollar bills on fire. And for what!

    Oh you are so right about the flooding in Texas and people missing and also young girls from the Christian Camp. I am praying for all. I love the mittens that you made. Such pretty colors. Many bangs in the air here too....hopefully the fireworks will slow down soon. Take good care, God bless you and your dear family.

  11. Happy 4th of July! Some people are just rude with fireworks. Poor Zoey. It is not an easy time for pets, so many will run away these few days of fireworks. Your decorations are fun to see!
