Wonderful Weekend

Goodness!  We've had a wonderful weekend.  I'm sorry if this post is a little long.  We stayed at the lake Friday night and on Saturday morning after our facetime with Miss Piper and her Mommy, we went into the town of Deer Park and had breakfast at a tiny, little small town diner.  8-10 miss-matched tables and chairs and tacky decor but the best breakfast I've had in a long time  For $5.99 I had 2 slices of bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and sour dough toast.  Yum!

Then we went to an antique/thrift store just down the street that we had never been to.  Oh, the treasures I found.  A little angel. A pile of books about pioneer families and a few other odds and ends.  All for well under $10.00.  The books alone were worth at least $50-70 so I feel I did very well.

Dennis looks cold in this picture but I'm not sure why.  It was warm but very very windy.  There were only two other couples in the park so it was very quiet.  We came home in the late afternoon and then went back out after church today for several hours to scrub the awning and do some clean up outside since the wind had died down.  I'm planning to go back out tomorrow morning with Chloe and I'll spend the night since Dennis has a meeting fairly late into the evening.  My first night of the season alone in the trailer.
Pretty.  The view from our back window.
Sunset on Friday.  I never tire of this view from the window.
The flowers are starting to bloom.
I  got a new piece of furniture yesterday.  I have been watching Craigslist, antique and thrift stores for several years trying to find an old "Kitchen Queen" as Teresa tells me that they're called for the amount I was able to pay.  I was dog-sitting for a neighbor last week and going in and out of the house through the garage with her door opener.  In the middle of the garage sat this cabinet all wrapped in clear plastic.  Well, well, well.  I thought about it and then decided I didn't have a thing to lose by asking my neighbor about it.  So I asked her if it was wrapped to go to one of their kids, or to sell or go into storage?  She told me she wanted to sell it...guess who's house it went too?  Hubby drove down the street and we loaded it into his truck.  It fits perfectly in this corner doesn't it?  Yippee!!!  I got to spend last evening playing with it.  :-)

At some point the drawer pulls and two of the cabinet handles were replaced with ugly chrome handles so I want to try to find something closer to the original handles and hinges that you see.
Teresa has one that looks almost exactly like it, only hers is walnut that belonged to her grandparents.  This one was painted at some time during the past approximately 100 years.  I love, love, love it!  The metal counter top pulls out to almost twice the width that you see.  Here it's pushed into it's smallest position.

I've put a few things in and on it already.
Look at this metal top.  I love imagining how many loaves of bread and pies were made on this top.  It is well worn and well loved.
This picture shows the flour sifter.  The flour bin is in the cabinet above it.
I've chosen to keep my most used cookbooks in this spot.  You can tell the sifter was used a lot as it's worn clear through the metal screen.
In the top I have some of my glassware and mason jar glasses.  I'll be adding more as I go through other cabinets.  Do you see my recipe box?  Harvest gold from high school in the 1970's.  Ha!
A few treasures.  My new angel that I found Saturday.  She was only 40 cents!  Two blue birds from Michaels I found this afternoon.  99 cents each!
This cookbook is tucked in the corner.  I bought it while we were on vacation on the Oregon coast a few years ago.  I think I found it in Tillamook.  It has recipes from a family that lives in Oregon.  I think the cookstove on the cover is fantastic don't you?
The top drawer has three dividers. Perfect for my cloth napkins. The ones one the right I made in 1979 and they still look new.  We used them all of the time.  The other drawers are currently empty but probably not for long.
And now a few of my "makes" since I posted last.  A square heart doily.  It's about 8 inches square and not blocked yet.  Sorry for the shadows.  I took the picture at 9:00 at night.
Two more baby hats and a burial bunting.  Since I took this picture I've finished another pink bunting and a blue one.  I have several more to make this week.
Poor little Piper has a terrible cold.  When we talk to her she tells us that she's sick.  It's progressed from the nasty runny nose to a cough.  Poor baby.

And now I'm off to bed so I can get up early and go back to the lake.  It's supposed to be sunny and in the 60's tomorow.  I plan to take a few long walks and also sit and knit or crochet and look at the lake.

I hope you all have a lovely week.  It's Holy Week and I hope each of you take a moment to remember the true reason for the Easter season.  Christ came to earth, died and rose again, to give us all the opportunity to live with him in eternity forever.  Hallelujah!

Blessings,
Betsy

  4. That Kitchen Queen is so COOL!! What a stroke of luck that was. And you had the perfect spot for it. It fits like it was made for that little nook. That sifter is really neat too. Love your 4-heart doily in the cream color. I made one in pink and I love it and use it all the time. I'm always moving it around. Have fun relaxing at the lake and crocheting. Wish I could come sit with you for a while. Sigh.

  6. Amen about remembering Holy Week... IF we don't experience Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, then Easter is meaningless... Seems as if there are so many Christians who just ignore Holy Week... I don't understand.

Love your new 'furniture' ---and I'm sure you will love it as much as it has been loved and cared for for many years.

Sorry about Piper's cold. Bless her heart...

Glad you are getting to spend some time at the lake. I'd want to LIVE there this time of year!!!!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. Yay! It's lake time again. Oh I know how much you love being there. It's such a wonderful place, too. Love the view you have. Oh what a great find. It looks just perfect where you put it. Love all the pretty things you have made. May the gift of love that Jesus gave to us all become fulfilled in the hearts of those who do not know Him. He is not dead, He has risen and lives forever and ever. And where He goes, we may go also, for He prepares a place for us in Heaven. Amen! :)

  9. I remember my grandmother having something similar to that. Of course, I was a kid and they were tenant farmers so I was always outside playing with my uncles. But I do remember it. She also had this big chest like box where she kept her flour for biscuits. It always had a pan, sifter and biscuit cutter at the ready inside. That cabinet is gorgeous and I love the way you are filing it. Enjoy your time at the lake.

  12. I wish I had a camper although I have a lake right across the street! LOL! But if I had a camper I wouldn't see all that I need to do in the house! LOL!
It was in the 80's today but I was busy getting a box ready for the "grands" to mail out.
I am so sorry I haven't been over here.....Spring is my busiest time.
I will send you my email....my Yahoo account is not working so I'll send you from my other one. Thanks for the drawing. I love your crocheted items and Happy Easter to you and yours!
Oh! LOVE the Hoosier cabinet. I used to have one similar but sold it to my daughter when I moved down here. I miss it though....I got a lot of use out of it and you have decorated yours so sweetly!

  13. Amen. Hallelujah!

Your Kitchen Queen is delightful - imagine how thrilled the original owner must have been when she got it. What dreams she dreamt while standing at that worktop kneading her dough or mixing up a cake.... How wonderful that such a lovely useful piece of furniture can live on in your kitchen!

The lake is beautiful - I can see why you would never tire of the view.

A blessed Easter to you and yours. :)

  14. Hi Betsy, it looks like you had a very nice time at the lake. I love your Kitchen Queen, how cool! It's in really nice condition and I love how you're using it, with the books in the sifter cabinet. It looks great in your house. I hope Piper feels better soon, poor thing. Tis the season for colds, of course. I hope you and your family have a very happy Easter.

  15. Ah Hallelujah indeed, Betsy, to the King of Glory, our Lord Jesus!!
Who gave His all for us upon the cruel cross of Calvary, where He bore our sins, that we might be forgiven, by faith alone in Him!!! I love You, Lord Jesus, oh that all might look and live!

Beautiful treasure there, dear Betsy don't you marvel at the way the Lord mercifully gives us the desires of our hearts in the most unexpected ways...
If you had not pet-sat for your neighbour you wouldn't have seen it.
Thanks so much for popping over, have missed you cos not been able to blog lately.
