Scenes from Washington DC

Today I'm on my way home from our Nation's capital.  I just finished a 6 hour flight and I'm sitting at Seatac airport in Seattle, WA waiting for my flight to Spokane.  We flew directly over Spokane on our way here.  I could see my neighborhood!  Could I have a parachute please?  Nope.  It will be an additional 5 hours after passing over my home before I land in Spokane.  I'm tired.  And I have a headache.  But, I digress.  Here are a few pictures I took while at Mandy's. We didn't get out much because of the weather but we did go a couple of places.

This is the frozen Cheapeake Bay from the kitchen of Brad and Mandy's friends home.  The squares are the screen in the window. No way was I going outside. It was COLD.  All of the land where you see the sun setting belongs to the Smithsonian Institute and will never be built on.
This is the view from their loft.  Can you imagine seeing this every night when the sun sets?  Gorgeous.
The next few photos are of the National Basilica to Mary in Washington DC.  That's not the exact name.  The brochure is in my suitcase somewhere in this airport and I can't remember the exact wording. I have never seen anything like this outside of Europe. It competes with St. Paul's in London and Notre Dame in Paris in my eyes.  I didn't know we had such an ornate church in the U.S.  With my Iphone photos I can only give you a small taste of the beauty.
Intricate mosaic domes in the roof.
The main cathedral.  There was a smaller one in the basement with the crypt.
There were at least 12-15 smaller chapels off of the main hall.
More mosaic domes.
Amazingly beautiful workmanship.
A drive by photo. :-). No place to park and too cold to walk anywhere.
We ate at a restaurant right by this riverboat on a section of the Potomac River that wasn't frozen.
Look!  A street named after me AND the state where I live.  It's all about me you know!  Ha!  I loved all of the row houses around town.  Some were gorgeous and well taken care of and some were horribly decrepit.  We got lost in a not so good part of town one day, but I wasn't about to be seen taking pictures there.  Scary.
Slipper socks I made for Mandy on Friday and Saturday.  See my boo-boo in the sole of the slipper on the right?  No matter.  I brought them home with me and I'm going to cover that boo-boo up with a nonskid sole and mail them back to her.  No use ripping it out when it's covered up, right?
It warmed up A LOT yesterday.  We were able to take a walk and let Piper play outside for awhile.  Most of the snow melted in the past two days.
Piper took this selfie of us last night.  I miss her so much already.
And now I need to find a restroom before I board my last flight home.  Spokane or bust!

  1. Beautiful church and pictures! You are a super-fast knitter to make those slippers in two days. Glad you have a fix for your little problem. Always nice not to have to rip out anything. Piper looks so happy and sweet. Have a nice trip home.

  3. Glad you've had a safe trip so far. I hope the rest of it is safe. The photos were beautiful but oh, that snow! I'm glad ours is gone but it looks like rain for the next several days. Beautiful Piper. There's no wonder you miss her.

  5. That selfie made me laugh--LOVE the expression on Miss Piper's face!! What gorgeous photos of your trip! I know I would love the bay. My hubby, as I've said, used to live not too far from Washington DC and he talks about how BIG the Chesapeake Bay is. Beautiful cathedral--I had not heard of it before.
    Blessings,

  6. I really enjoyed every bit of this post, Betsy: beautiful photos and a good narrative with a positive punch at the end :-) I hope you are safely home now or will be shortly, and that your headache has disappeared. Your fix for Mandy's slipper is very clever and practical as well since slipper socks are, well you know, sometimes too slippery! xx

  7. I'm glad you're home.. at least I hope you are, it's 5:15. That photo of Piper is just adorable, you can see in her eyes how excited she is to know how to take a photo with grandma's phone. I bet she didn't want to give it back. I know you'll be missing her, but just count your blessings that you got to spend 2 weeks with your girls. Hopefully either they'll come visit next or you'll get to go back soon. I have no idea when I'll see my g-girls.. it's their turn to come here but my daughter has not said they will as they are planning to go to Disney World this summer.. I think I'm out of luck. :-( Hope you come to Portland soonish. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  9. Gotta love those flights that take you all over the country. So exhausting as well. I try to fly non-stop if I can. Sometimes it is too expensive. Your little granddaughter is a cutie. I always miss mine as soon as I leave.
