Canning Day

Yesterday and today have found me busy in the kitchen. In fact, so busy that now I'm having back spasms and still have to clean up the kitchen! Oh oh! This is what I've been up to:
The two day canning total is 20 qts. tomatoes, 12 qts. chili sauce,26 pints zuchinni relish, 26 bags, frozen zuchinni, 22 bags frozen green beans, 18 bags frozen carrots. I also made refrigerator pickles and a pasta salad. I'm exhausted but content. There is a certain satisfaction in doing things like this for us to enjoy throughout the winter months. Here is a picture of some of the beautiful sunflowers that line the road at our trailer. We've been told to feel free to cut as many as we want so I've enjoying this bouquet all week.
Here's hubby relaxing on Labor Day. No labor was done by either of us except to make meals. :-)
And Chloe relaxed too!
I promised you pictures of the blanket I made for our newest yet-to-be born granddaughter. I didn't want to show it until after the baby shower and then I forgot! Here's the front.
This is the back. I tried to find a way to finish it so all the weaving in wasn't showing and this is what I came up with. Flannel with suns and moons on it. I hemmed it and then crocheted it to the knitted blanket. Then I hand tied it like a quilt. Overall I'm happy with the way it turned out.
I had extra flannet so I made a recieving blanket to match, crocheting around the edges.
Well I'm off to go clean up the kitchen. Anyone have a few minutes and would like to help? Have a wonderful week. Blessings, Betsy

  2. WOW! Well done, Betsy!!! All the canning is impressive and the blanket is an heirloom for sure!!! The crocheting around the edges of both blankets is a lovely practical finish. A friend from church made a flannel blanket for my oldest daughter 31 years ago, and I used it with both of my girls and Mary Kathrine is using it with all three of her girls. Thanks for posting.
Oh, and I'm looking forward to our lunch date :)
    Blessings to you and yours.

  4. Lovely blanket and canned goods. How do you crochet around the edge of something? So far I am up to 5 times trying the letters. If you see this comment you know I made it eventually.

  5. I'm sorry you had a hard time posting. Those letters can be difficult to read!

When I crochet around the flannel blankets I use a darning needle to poke holes evenly around the edge of the blanket. Then I make up the pattern as I go, usually 3 dc, chain 1 and repeat around. In each corner I add a few more dc to make a nice turn. Sorry it's not more specific. I make up a lot of things as I go, cooking included!

  6. Your last comment made me laugh, Betsy! "I make up a lot of things as I go, cooking included!" Hahaha!

Right now I'm 'making' up the decreases on my sweater sleeves. The first one was WAY too big. And now I've got an error somewhere. ugh.

But it's Monday, it's sunny and the kids' lessons are finished and they are outside playing. Maybe now I can tackle that little problem...
    Blessings!
Ps. Where did you get all of your tomatoes and zucchini? It all looks SOoooo yummy!!
